How Kocoono Weighted Blanket can alleviate the symptoms of menopause?

Some research shows that women are twice as likely to have insomnia as men. Unfortunately, insomnia and sleep difficulties disproportionately affect women due in no small part to the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, postpartum and menopause. Founder of Kocoono, Emer Flannery, ( Irish entrepreneur born in London ) designed Kocoono Weighted Blanket LUXE with the capabilities of cold therapy that aids women to sleep better and support their wellbeing. This came about after a serendipitous conversation with a lady that worked in the bank who advised Emer that she loves Deep Touch Pressure to help her sleep but was unable to put anything on her at nighttime due to night sweats and feelings of restlessness being some of her menopause symptoms. This triggered the design adjustment of the Kocoono Luxe Weighted blanket for menopause. The weighted bands can be removed and placed in the freezer and the segmentation of the channels allows for easy airflow.

The World Health Organisation and the International Menopause Society dubbed October as World Menopause Month, in honour of this we want to explain how a Kocoono blanket can benefit those going through this huge life change. We all know someone who is about to or is currently going through the Menopause so any little support at this time makes all the difference. We also recommend checking out the amazing work our friend Breeda does over at The Midlife Women Rock Project where she has resources, a community and consultations to avail of.

How Kocoono Weighted Blanket can alleviate the symptoms of menopause?

The Kocoono Weighted Blanket LUXE is comprised of 11 weighted bands secured neatly within channels down the length of the Blanket that are easily removable and customisable. You can remove the inner weighted bands, put them in the freezer and reinsert them back in the Blanket to cool the body. By inserting only 4 of the inner weighted bands for one hour, the users can have a cooling effect that lasts up to 3 hours, which is ideal for fighting the hot flushes common during Menopause. The channels are all segmented and the inner bands lie within these. Due to the segmentation the Kocoono Weighted Blanket LUXE blanket is easy to move and allows for easy airflow to come through ensuring the body can stay cool., We have cotton only version available which is recommended for those currently or about to go through the menopause.

You can see how the cooling effect works in the video below:

Those women who have difficulties sleeping during Menopause, like Hilda, are finding the Kocoono Blanket a godsend:

"For anyone who has sleep issues, particularly us women of a certain menopause age. My sleep has improved so much with this gorgeous product, it cheers me up with its textures and colours, but most of all it's like an enormous hug when you need it most," Hilda states in one of the reviews of the Kocoono LUXE.

The menopausal decline of estrogen contributes to a lack of serotonin, which can cause anxiety and depressed mood, all major contributors to increased sleep difficulties. The Kocoono weighted blanket can help women alleviate these symptoms by applying gentle pressure across the body. Pressure Therapy calms the nervous system and releases serotonin by acting like a hug or massage, making women feel embraced and comforted when they most need it. The distribution in inner weighted bands also ensures that the Blanket moves easier with the body and "cocoons" the body nicely. We all know the importance of getting enough quality and quantity sleep; the world looks a lot brighter when you do.

Emer explains how she came up with the idea of adding Cold Therapy as a feature in her prototype:

"I found that my female customers felt comforted by the feeling of being hugged with Kocoono, but some of them still had sleep difficulties because the night-time hot flushes awakened them. So, I designed the removable inner weighted bands of the Kocoono with a material that these women could put in the freezer to cool down their bodies."

The Pressure and Cold Therapy combination provided by Kocoono works well for those women who practice high impact sports and relieve the tension in the muscles. Kerry is using Kocoono for this purpose and tells of her experience:

"I do Crossfit, and at least one part of my body has sore muscles at all times - I don't know if it's the weight of the blanket or that it helps my muscles completely relax at night, but I've found a huge change in recovery time since I've started using it"

The Kocoono Weighted Blanket has also become popular to aid the symptoms of Restless Legs, which is a common Health condition in Women, especially during pregnancy. The gentle pressure applied on the legs stimulates the pressure points and relaxes the muscles. It also encourages stillness, which decreases the impulse to move the legs while sleeping. Kocoono is versatile and can be used safely during pregnancy, as the inner weighted bands can be removed on the upper part of the Blanket, avoiding the pressure over the belly.

Other benefits of Cold Therapy

Some other benefits from women using Pressure and Cold Therapy with the Kocoono Weighted Blanket that Emer designed are:

  • It combats anxiety: Feeling too hot at night can increase levels of anxiety
  • For hot sleepers who suffer from night sweats
  • For sports injuries, muscle pain or swellings
  • It helps to relieve the muscle pain and stiffness caused by Osteoarthritis.

The Kocoono Weighted Blanket comes in two forms, a Basic Kocoono and a more versatile Luxe version, which is the one where users can use the cooling effect. The Kocoono Weighted Blanket Luxe is the original version that Emer Flannery launched on Kickstarter. After having had some customers asking for the same benefits as the original Kocoono™ Weighted Blanket , they created a Basic version with fewer features.
